What a place looks like

Each chair has a brass clip, a pencil, and the sheets for that sitting. Mali lays them out before the door opens, so the first minutes are for reading rather than for waiting on a printer. The velvet curtains stay drawn in the evening so the lamp on the table is the light you work by. In the morning briefing the curtains are opened a little and the same clips hold a shorter packet.

Phones go in a basket by the door during a read-aloud. You may retrieve them when the segment ends. Water is on the sideboard. There is no meal. If you need a pause, the steward stops the replay; the point of the desk is that a mark can be corrected while the example is still in front of you.

What to bring

• A pencil you like, even though one is on the clip.
• For a desk review, the date and instrument of the session you want read, sent ahead so the profile can be printed.
• For the studio, one recent session you watched, described in a sentence, not a file full of annotations.
• Comfortable layers. Somchai was right about the air conditioning.
